In the world of teen fantasy movies only one has been the greatest:Harry Potter. This week is the battle between two teen franchises:The Mortal Instruments & Percy Jackson. So which one is better?
Percy Jackson &The Lighting Thief disappointed fans of the books and the general public worldwide. So does this follow in it's footsteps? not completely. The acting of the teenage actors has improved and the additions [Leven Rambin and Douglas Smith ] sit comfortably in their roles. Percy Jackson 2 is more of a requel: A reboot [Something that basically starts the whole story, setting or cast all over again] and a sequel. The new actors such as [Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion&Antony Head] are welcome,Tucci a humorous and well needed addition to the cast I feel should have been in the predecessor. The screenwriter makes sure that Tucci's Role[Miserable camp leader Mr.D]is like the character from the book and he certainly does it well. The prologue at the start is positive yet may confuse the audience and they may wonder who these characters are and what they are facing. For fans of the book this is a good film, being more truthful to the book. The film throws some new inventive styles and ideas at us and some of these ideas work. The story involving Percy and Tyson is really Heart-warming, we learn some life lessons and their chemistry is great here.
Now here for the negatives:
One of my problems was Tyson. He felt a little wooden in places and awkward. Another was it wasn't fast paced :It felt rushed. Event passed event after event and it all felt rushed.I admit that the return of Luke was not helpful he felt as wooden as Tyson. His character felt wasted and out of place. In the movie[Spoiler] he gets eaten twice and that's how he is wasted. Another things is...
It felt a little bit generic& clichéd. The prophecy was another cliché and Anthony Head's performance was al right but I still felt like he was acting on TV again as King Uther[This actor has been in Merlin and other shows]and Nathan Fillion felt a bit out of place. A bit miscast. And the Kronos ending should never have happened. Kronos's CGI is rubbish showing him as pathetic,it feels very rushed and I didn't like it.
Percy Jackson is a simplistic adventure which may be a bit generic . Percy Jackson and the sea of monsters deserves 3.5 stars because it's fun yet serious in places,it may disappoint fans and some of it feels very forced.
Percy Jackson is a good family film. It may not be the greatest but still deserves to be watched. So yes Percy Jackson is a recommended family film.
