★★★★☆
To celebrate the upcoming release of Star Trek:Into Darkness I review the 2009 reboot of Star Trek Directed by JJ Abrams,Starring Chris Pine,Zachary Quinto,Zoe Saldana,Simon Pegg,John Cho,Bruce Greenwood,Winnoa Ryder,Eric Bana,Karl Urban,Anton Yelchin,Ben Cross and Leonard Nimroy,Score composed and conducted by Michael Giacchino,Based on Star Trek by Gene Roddenberry,Written by Robert Orci and Alex Kurstman
Above[Nero,a Romoulan portrayed by Eric Bana]
The film starts with an introduction to Kirk's parents portrayed by Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Morrision. Nero is the one who kills his father. The opening I have to say is extremely well done, not too fast paced but making sense. As we see Eric Bana's performance is mediocre An average villainous performance but I can understand because Bana has not done a villain before. Hemsworth's performance for a relative unknown then is a good addition showing off serious but Pine like charm. He makes it feel like it is him in charge of the ship. The score done by Michael Giacchino is beautiful and moving piece of emotion showing the world that he is the new John Williams of the decade. As we see Jim or James T Kirk son of the people we saw in the first scenes is a rebel. It's a fun and rock filled sequence showing the audience that he is a rebel. We switch to Vulcan as we see that Spock is the opposite of Kirk in some ways. We see that this is a much more personal Spock and he is quite a rateable character as a young person. Bullying is an issue people can relate to. As we see when Spock has grown up and he declines the offer of their academy. Well I can understand because the Vulcans consider his human mothership as a disadvantage It is understandable. Normal people would hate your race for doing that?We switch back to Kirk as he is a drunken idiot. Pine perfectly captures this in his performance and as we meet him as a young adult we also meet Zoe Saldana as Uhara. She does have a better performance than Avatar that year[I don't entirely blame her]and she acts like a stuck up girl who doesn't want the boys crowding around her. As we see Bruce Greenwood in a Nick Fury like premise and we meet Bones McCoy. I haven't seen any original 1960's TV episodes but Karl Urban has done a very good paranoid performance at the start. Kirk is now at Starfleet and he is a rebel. Warning:A green alien girl in a bra having sex with Kirk. Some of this stuff is unsuitable and well parents should be a little bit cautious. We see that Kirk is a messer, the guy who does not take things seriously. We see that Spock has an extreme dislike of Kirk and that we see he is under suspension. All thanks to Karl Urban's serious performance and Pine's acting this sequence is greatly done. Abrams has a serious talent for direction in this film. We then go onto the Enterprise as it keeps getting funnier and funnier with Bones injecting a variety of stuff into him. He has giant hands, numb tounge everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We discover that the ship from the beginning is sending a drill to destroy Vulcan. As they use these space-suits to jump down it is a thrilling sequence of fighting and Jon Chu's performance as Sulu is brilliantly done, a different take from most of his comedy stuff. The score in these scenes is so memorable and the rivalry between Spock and Kirk is raised up a level. Greenwood's performance is stern, serious like a teacher and quite similar to Nick Fury from the MCU[Marvel Cinematic Universe]. As they jump you feel the excitement the energy, the windswept faces it's so enjoyable. The drill is a good creation better than the Nanomites could ever be. Kurstman and Orci at the minute is creating an enjoyable, non Transformers action packed experience. As Kirk and Sulu clash with Romulan men it adds more to the action spectacle that seems to have shown the Star Wars prequels who's boss. Star Trek is winning me over insanely. As Kirk nearly falls through the giant drill and Spock trying to save his dying planet we see what happens when you lose everything. There is a certain amount of emotion in the planet's falling scenes but not enough dramatic tendency. We do see Spock is not just an emotionless brute:He has feeling, emotion,an uncontrollable rage he cannot hide. The score in these scenes are greatly timed and Giacchino keeps on giving a emotional grande. What surprised me that Uhara likes Spock:The way it was marketed Saldana looks and feels like the love interest of Kirk which will probably be fulfilled in Star Trek into Darkness. Nero tortures Pike in a entirely disturbing sequence that Abrams used old special effects for. As we see Kirk is sent to an ice planet and meets Nimroy or should I say Grandad Spock. Nimroy hasn't gotten any older illuminating Quinto's actions perfectly
As we see Nero has a vendetta with old Spock and we now know it is an alternate reality now. This sets the universes we saw in the previous films apart from this one. Now we see Simon Pegg as Scotty. Pegg's performance is great and witty so many funny one liners. Pegg overeacts in his performance which is good for the good character. As we see old Spock wants to help by getting young Spock off the ship by emotionally compromised. We see what happened in Spock's childhood with Kirk and what happened. A fun sequence as Scott is stuck in the water and it's a fast paced chase across to save Scott from getting shredder in lots of tiny Scott pieces. As Kirk is hunted across the Enterprise and things get worse Kirk becomes Captain. As Nero sets the drill for Earth Spock and Kirk on the ship with Spock must try and stop them from destroying Earth. The score keeps getting better and better. As Nero clashes with Kirk Spock faces destroying the ship. As we see Spock saves Earth by destroying the bridge and Kirk facing Nero's men we see a thrilling end as Nero ignites the red matter. As we see Spock goes straight into the ship surviving and we see Nero's ship destroyed. Orci and Kurstman haven't just thought of a happy ending and we see that Enterprise could be caught in the blackhole made of red matter. They struggle and struggle but they survive. Nimroy has still got it returning to the franchise and talking to Quinto feels like Quinto is talking to Nimroy in a real conversation. They feel so alike. We see the end as it is left on a cliffhanger. To be continued...
I give this four stars because it is an enjoyable reivention of a classic franchise, great, intelligent storytelling yet although the vulgar and swearing moments dumb down moments and make it a less sutiable film possibly making this Transformers 2 in space but is saved by the screenwriting duo's intelligent plot premise
